Environmental Considerations and Site Preparation

Temperature can make all the difference in how your grout sets. During installation and curing, keep the tile surface and the surrounding air between 50-85 degrees Fahrenheit (10-29 degrees Celsius). If you are working over in-floor heating, remember to turn it off 48 hours before you start and keep it off for another 48 hours after. Doing so helps prevent any uneven curing that could affect your results.

Before beginning your project, make sure tile joints are clean. Remove any adhesive residue, dust or debris. If you are working with porous or textured tiles, apply a grout release agent to prevent staining.

Mixing and Application Guidelines

Recommended tools when working with ARDEX FL Grout include the following:

  • Mixing paddle
  • Sturdy mixing container
  • Heavy-duty drill (minimum 650 rpm)
  • Measuring bucket
  • Rubber float
  • ARDEX sponge for cleanup
  • Vacuum attachment with HEPA filtration (to keep dust at bay while mixing)
  • White Scotch-Brite® pad

For mixing, you will need 2 1/4-2 1/2 quarts of clean water for every 25 lb bag of grout. Mix it at a low speed until you achieve a smooth, lump-free consistency. The working time is 30 minutes at 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius), so plan accordingly.

Tile Compatibility

ARDEX FL Grout is a versatile choice that works well with various tile types, including:

  • Porcelain
  • Glass
  • Quarry
  • Ceramic
  • Mosaic
  • Most natural stone tiles — avoid moisture-sensitive varieties

Its flexibility makes it ideal for everything from residential kitchens and bathrooms to bustling commercial spaces.

Sealing and Maintenance

ARDEX FL Rapid Set Flexible Sanded Grout is stain-resistant and highly durable, so sealing is not required. However, once the grout has fully cured, a penetrating sealer can be applied for an extra layer of protection.

To keep your installation looking sharp over time:

  • Clean regularly with a pH-neutral tile cleaner.
  • Steer clear of harsh chemicals, steam cleaners or power washers — these can wear down your grout.
  • Wipe up spills right away to avoid staining.

Precautions

Watch out for temperature changes during installation and curing. In hot or humid conditions, follow ARDEX’s warm-weather installation guidelines. Monitor air and substrate temperatures, use windbreaks and work quickly in smaller areas to prevent premature drying.
